Black Trail - Grizedale Tarn Trail
Not black as in technicality, just the colour of the markers!
Distance: 7 miles from the hire centre (6 miles from Bogle crag car park) Time: Approximately 1.5hrs Difficulty: Easy (but with some steep hills)
Find the route on our Komoot page with a downloadable GPX file HERE
This is a lovely family trail which is a big wide gravel track around the east side of the forest. This trail starts from the Bogle Crag Car Park, which involves a short road section to the start if you are beginning at the hire centre.
The trail begins with a long uphill whether you ride it clockwise or anticlockwise from the first junction. The hill then levels off and undulates around the east side of the forest, offering views over the Ambleside fells. Keep your eyes pealed for Go-Apes vehicles and all those enjoying Zip-Trekking through the trees.
Possible extension:
You can also join this trail and the start of the purple trail for a 2 hour ride, beginning clockwise on the purple up to Moor Top car park. Once you've crossed the road and re-entered the forest, once you see the black signs turn left instead of following the purple to the right. Follow the black from here on making sure to turn left down to Bogle crag car park to return back to the hire centre northwards along the road.
Sculptures to watch out for…
If you enjoy finding the sculptures around the forest, keep your eyes pealed for the Light Column by Charles Bray, The Seers Well by Belle Shafir, Cloak of Seasons by Walter Bailey, Touch Stone by Gregory Scott-Gurner, Taking a wall for a walk by Andy Goldsworthy, A flower in Flower by Keir Smith, Living Space by Petre Nikoloski, Romeo by Rupert Ackroyd and Owen Bullet, Some Fern by Kerry Morrison and Red Sandstone Fox by Gordan Young. Please be aware that we do not guarantee you will see all or any of these sculptures, some even need a short walk into the woods off the trail. But keeps yours eyes peeled and you might see a few!
